Backgammon's Opening Roll

The opening roll at backgammon is important as it will give players a good advantage at an early start of the game. Here are some suggested moves.

1. Doubles

1-1 Player close the bar point and 5 points by having 8/7 (2) and 6/5 (2).

2-2 Player close at 20 points by having 24/20 (2). This is another strong move and deserves close play at 11 and 4 points by having 13/11 (2) and 6/4 (2).

3-3 Player close at 21 points and the 5 points by having 24/21 (2) and 8/5 (2). The number 21 has strategic value that is similar to 20 points as well.

4-4 Player close at 20 points and having 9 points can play at 24/20 (2) and 13/9 (2).

5-5 Player can move his or her two pieces checker from his or her midpoint to 3 points spot by having 13/3 (2).

6-6 Player can close to his or her opponent's bar point and his or her own bar point by having 24/18 (2) and 13/7 (2).

2. Non-Doubles

1-2 Player is having the slot at 13/11 and 6/5 and then he or she split play at 24/23 and 13/11. These are the two most common games that seem to be equal. This means this is not a serious opponent.

1-3 The game 8/5 and 6/5 is an obvious play only.

2-3 The split play is at 24/21 and 13/11, which came out better than having to play with 13/10 and 13/11.

1-4 Player split 24/23 and 13/9 that came out clearly higher to playing slot at 13/9 and 6/5. Believably the reason is that with 9 points the player can have so many better point numbers in his or her next turn. Anyway, you do not need the slotted 5 points.

2-4 You can do 8/4 and 6/4.

3-5 You can create a game of 13/10 and 13/9 and the most common game to split is 24/20 and 13/10, both are tied. You can also split 24/21 and 13/9, this can be your alternative, however, this is a little behind move.

1-5 Player can split 24/23 and 13/8, this will come out better than playing the slot at 13/8 and 6/5. Your next alternative is 24/18, which may come out worse play.

2-5 For player's normal game for about years of playing backgammon it is always 13/11 and 13/8. Nevertheless, new players might split 24/22 and 13/8, this may come out better. 13/8 and 6/4 can be a slotting game, however, this may be chosen by few but may not survive some rollouts.

3-5 The best play is 8/3 and 6/3, this is clear enough. Some common play is at 13/10 and 13/8 but not as inferior.

4-5 Player may split 24/20 and 13/8 and create play at 13/9 and 13/8, this may come out close fight. Splitting is much better. Remember that 24/15 is a weak play.

1-6 Your correct move is 13/7 and 8/7. However, an awful move is 13/7 and 6/5.

2-6 Split 24/18 and 13/11, this may come out higher. Run with your 24/16 as second but do not run far. 13/5 is a slotting play will be in third position.

3-6 Split 24/18 and 13/10, this will come out best. Run at 24/15 but you will not be far behind.

4-6 You can both run at 24/14 and then split at 24/18 and 13/9, both are equal.

5-6 There is no better possibility than 24/13.
